Media Evaluation

How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?

Many media products that are created a have ancillary products used to promote them. An ancillary text is a text that is used to support your main product and in terms of media this is normally to help advertised and promote your product.

In the early stages of development within our product we were originally going to create the ancillary texts of that being a radio advertisement and a poster but through research we felt that perhaps the best route for us to take was to do a poster and also website as this would have more be more informative and also be better created as it was made using skills we already had and could build upon. Furthermore we also found great difficulty when trying to analyze a radio advertisement as it very hard to obtain and advertisement in the style which we were going to create ours
.
When looking into creating a poster we first thought that It would be very formal and appear in places were teenagers would normally be such as in schools and places like coffee shops. When actually thinking about our ethos of the paper we decided that we were going to do fly posting as we felt this maybe a much more effective way of advertising and also it also appeals more to youth audience as it is rebellious.

Furthermore through the designs we produced we kept them very minimalist in order not to give too much away and also we felt that if each poster had a different tagline it would be more effective as the information on the products is very little but is a lot if you’ve seen all of the posters.

Further more using flyposting is an effective way of create a hype about our product. With fly posting there are generally quite large and quite in your face and are placed in very urban areas and upon places that people would see such as phone boxes and closed down shops. Further more it creates a hype because if it is seen and seen again with very little information then the audience will start to question as to what is about to come out onto the market thus creating a word of mouth type controversy on the product until it is eventually released .

Further more the pictures upon the posters aren’t very clear as to what they could be advertising and this another way in which we create cause controversy about our product. Our actual product and the ancillary text of the poster are simply linked through the branding of our logos and the unique design. We have researched into other newspapers and magazines and found that there are hardly any similar fonts or designs that could cause confusion of another product with ours.

Another ancillary text that we have created in order to help support and promote us is our website that we have created and designed in order to give our readers and a supportive online resource as well as having the newspaper. This also effectively helped us cross into another medium that being of the internet which helps us as product as it helps us to reach a wider audience. The website is much like the other ancillary product in design terms as it is quite simplistically designed but it also is very effective in portraying the youth culture message we are trying to put across and that also of being quite edgy and very distinctive.

Media Evaluation

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Codes and conventions are typical in any media product. Many media products follow the same codes and conventions as it easier for the audience to identify the products and also to relate to the product.

Our product is far from conventional. Since the medium that we are working in is print, specifically our project was to create a local newspaper. We expect this kind of media product to be quite formal and cover very current affair related articles on topics that affect the local area in which the paper is based, as well as politics and worldwide affairs.

Our newspaper comes under no such category as our newspaper is aimed at youth, which is a very small market to be in as there is hardly and local papers aimed at youth just for youth. Also the concept of our paper which is a sort of social method of bringing all different types of stereotypical youth subcultures together and breaking down barriers – barriers which often perpetuate stereotypes.
This is why our newspaper focuses heavily upon festivals and nightlife as it these are the main two social gatherings where these stereotypes are pulled apart and broken down.

Furthermore, our final media products are quite edgy and very simplistically designed as we felt that our products are aimed at youth cultures in general, therefore our product must be attractive to this core demographic audience, it must speak to them in their own language and also the edgier the design and format of the language the more they can relate to our product.

Our product and the language it uses is quite informal as we feel that the more formal the language used, the less relationship the audience will have with our product, as they may feel that is not quite reflecting the thoughts and views about youth culture from an understanding perspective.

The images used within our product we feel reflect a ‘darker’ side of youth culture that perhaps isn’t as ‘sugar-coated’ as it is in other media products. We felt that if we showed this side to youth culture then perhaps the audience will relate more with it as it isn’t sugar coated but it isn’t shown in such a negative way that it is to be frowned upon. Our design and logos reflect the edginess of what we are trying to achieve, and furthermore what we are trying to show is the reality of the breadth and vitality of British youth culture.

We feel that our final media product appeals to our audience as it has quite rebellious connotations within the design. Furthermore, on the design we feel that getting the design of our newspaper right was key to reaching our target audience successfully. Although we had fed back on how the form of our newspaper fell back on some youth orientated music magazines, we felt that the key to attracting our youth audience is to have quite stylized and from feedbacks point of view magazine like, product rather than one that is quite bland and lacks substance as it would not attract a youth audience.

Our newspaper also focuses heavily upon music and fashion which in todays society is what youth culture depends on as it gives them a sense of inviduality and represents themselves as a person. We want our newspaper to embrace this as we feel that these two areas are very important to adolescent life and are key to attracting our audience. Another part of our concept was to portray youth culture in a way that makes it realistic but not shown in a negative way unlike other media that portrays youth culture in a very negative light. Through the use of language and the content of our articles we believe that have achieved this.

We feel that overall our product isn’t conventional and that’s why our product would do well in the market that it would be placed in as it appeals to teens in a way that other youth aimed magazine don’t as they use this method of ‘sugar-coating’ everything as where as our newspaper attempts to create a certain truth, different to that produced and created by marketing machine and shows it how it is and gives the audience what they want and is realistic.

Website

This is the website in which I have designed. This is ancillary product that has been used to support our newspaper and also would be a means of advertisement and an online resource for our product. It is quite simplistically designed but is quite bold and striking. I created two pages and enter page and a main page as I feel that and enter page helps us stylistically and furthermore helps audience appeal. I believe that this design helps our audience to navigate around the webpage and also furthermore take in snippets of information about our product but still not giving away the overall concept of our newspaper.

I found this particular product very hard to design as I have never used Dreamweaver before and therefore had to learn how to use it. I made a basic template for the website design on photo shop and used Dreamweaver to manipulate and make it the enter page linkable to the main page I then added text, pictures and logos in Dreamweaver. I think overall being visually simplistic helps it to less complicated for an audience and therefore has more public appeal. Overall I am quite pleased with my website.

Website Inspiration

This is Art rocker, a website that is dedicated to showing its audience the combination of performance art and music within the entertainment industry. Much like our concept it combines two very similar attributes and places them in one category. The way this website is designed is the way in which I have tried to design my own. Only using the top banner as we do not have enough information for pages upon pages of information like this website but I felt that just the top banner upon the website is quite well designed and would be enough visually for a small local newspaper such as ours.
I feel that the website is quite bold and very creative in aspects of colour and design and keeps to a theme I also like the way it is laid out in quite a block like formation and further more does not provide to much information but just enough for it to be visually pleasing to an audience. I shall base my designs around this and create my website

Contents

This is my final product in which I have created. Amy and I choose to divide the creation process into two separate task s, I created the contents and she created the front cover. I am very proud of contents as it took a lot of time redesigning for me to be happy with it. I created it using Adobe Photoshop CS3 which I am quite familiar with but I still have learnt a lot in the creation process. For example the left banner I created using Adobe Firework. This was quite challenging as I knew I wanted something quite different and I wanted quite an abstract design as I believed this would help to improve the ethos and appeal to the audience and would strengthen the perspective of the reader upon our cultural message we are trying to get across. The design I created and eventually choose after much deliberation was one that I felt was quite simplistic yet quite bold and made a statement.

I choose this to design in this layout as I felt it worked a lot better and would be more visually effective upon the audience. Although it differs from my original layout plans I felt that when following them I couldn’t quite visualise the designs I had made with the intentions of the newspaper I wanted to deliver to my audience.

The mission statement within the paper was quite challenging as I had to put across our ethos within three paragraphs which was a difficult task with so many thoughts to put across to our audience. I feel that I have wrote to the best of my ability and I feel that I am very happy with what I have written and also overall with the whole design
